Do your research and stop looking like an idiot
The Internet is almost too viral these days. People post / repost / reblog something without any background information, and only do so to look like a good person and to look like they’re making a difference.
But you’re not. You’re perpetuating something you know nothing about, have done absolutely no research on, and you and many others will not actually DO something. Reblogging and reposting without action does absolutely nothing. Okay, it creates some awareness, but without action you’re not making a difference.
Remember a while ago when everyone changed their Facebook profile pictures to Disney characters? Besides violating the Facebook terms of service and copyright law, what did that do? Did it stop child abuse? No. Or how about when everyone changed their Tumblr backgrounds to purple, did it stop hatred towards Gay people? No.
Reblogging and reposting about Kony or Invisible Children is not doing anything. Do you know where Uganda is, other than that it’s in Africa? I doubt you could point it out on a map. Did you care about this yesterday? Probably not. Will you care about this a week from now, or will you be more concerned about that project at work, that exam for school, or what you’re going to wear on your date?
Also, do you know anything about the organization you’re perpetuating information about? Most of the donations don’t actually end up in Uganda to help the children. Go do some research.
I’ll be honest, I really don’t know much about what is truly going on. I do follow news and try to keep up with current events and issues, but there is a lot of information overload and it can be hard to keep up on every little thing. The one thing that I don’t do, however, is pretend like I know and support something to make myself look good. If I want to post about something I research it prior to forming an opinion and posting said opinion.
Please, do research before you perpetuate anymore false information.
